The Perspective Machine

Tell it what you earn.
It will show you where you stand —
and who you'd be, everywhere on earth.

One number, eight billion neighbours. See where you really stand — and who you would be if your income lived somewhere else.

Stays on your device. Nothing you type is sent or stored.

Your number never leaves this page. The math happens on your device, and the number is never stored — not here, not with us. We count page views and button presses without cookies; neither ever includes what you typed.

Questions people ask

What is The Perspective Machine?
A free, anonymous data-art site. Tell it what you earn and it shows you where you stand among 8.2 billion people, then re-lives the same income in 145 countries — who you would be there — and finishes with what your money weighs elsewhere on the curve. Everything runs in your browser; your number never leaves your device.
How rich am I compared to the rest of the world?
Type your household take-home income and the people it supports. The machine places you on the world income distribution built from World Bank survey data and tells you, in percent, how many people you out-earn — floored, never rounded up.
What is the global median income?
About $7.73 a day per person in 2021 PPP dollars — roughly $2,800 a year. Half of humanity lives on less. That is the middle of the line the machine walks you across.
How do incomes compare country by country?
Every country has its own page: its median income, its curve, what it takes to stand where, and the share of its people on each of the four income levels. Start with United States, United Kingdom, India, China, Brazil, Nigeria, Germany, France, Portugal, Spain, Canada, Australia, Mexico, Indonesia, Philippines, Pakistan, South Africa, Kenya — or see all 145 countries.
How is my position computed?
Household take-home income divided by the people it supports; expressed in 2021 prices using your country's CPI; converted with the World Bank's 2021 consumption-PPP factor; then placed on the World Bank PIP percentile distributions. Before-tax entries are converted with published single-worker rates and the derived figure is always shown. Nothing is resolved finer than the top 0.1%, where household surveys thin out.
Is my income stored or sent anywhere?
No. The site is a static page and the whole machine is client-side: there are no accounts, no cookies, and no record of any income anyone typed. Page views are counted in aggregate, without cookies or identifiers — which pages get read, never what anyone typed.
Where does the data come from?
Country income curves from the World Bank Poverty and Inequality Platform (2021 PPP); the extreme-poverty trend from Our World in Data at the World Bank's $3.00-a-day line; population, age and births from UN World Population Prospects; land geometry from Natural Earth. The full methodology, including what the machine refuses to claim, is at theperspectivemachine.com/methodology.
